Ultimate Owl Walks are outings geared towards locating and seeing several owl species in one evening. New Jersey is home to eight species of owls - all of which can be found during the winter months. This outing will begin about a half hour before sunset in order to focus on Short-eared and Snowy Owls. Both species are most active at dusk and dawn, and we are currently in an irruption year for Snowy Owls!

Once the sun sets, we will move on to a forested area in search of Great-horned, Barred, Eastern Screech, and possibly even Barn Owl. We will change locations a few times and drive to areas known for high owl activity. Our group will implore several methods to try and locate nearby owls. We cannot guarantee owl sightings, but we will discuss where each species lives, their migratory habits, and where you can find some of these species near you!

Overall, the outing will last approximately three hours. It is recommended that you dress warm in layers and bring water. Some stops will have outdoor portable bathrooms and others will not. Each location will include walking and standing for periods of time. At one stop we will be hiking about a mile. Please bring or wear hiking boots or shoes that are waterproof. We also recommend bringing binoculars or a camera if you have them for the daytime portion of the outing. A flashlight is also fine to bring - green or red LED lights are best, but white lights or a cell phone light are fine too.
